Working Out Your Council Tax

You will need to know 3 things:

• What the valuation band for your home is. (See the Council Tax Bands section below).
• How much does Council in the locality you live in charge for this band
• Are you eligible for a discount or exemption

Tenants are usually responsible for paying the Council Tax. Littlejohns will notify the relevant Council when new Tenants move into or out of a property. If you are a Student you maybe entitled to a reduction in all or part of your Council Tax liability and it is very important that you provide Littlejohns with your Matriculation Number.

The general rule about discounts is if there is one person liable to pay Council Tax and living in the property alone a single person’s discount is applied at 25%

To qualify as a Student, you must either:

• study for 24 weeks for 21 hours per week in each academic year
• be a foreign language assistant working in a school or other educational establishment and be registered with the British Council
• be under 20 years old and be studying for a non-advanced course for at least 12 hours a week for three months. Non-advanced courses include A levels, Highers, and Level 3 SVQ.

Please remember if you are a Student and you move into a flat with a professional then Council Tax will be charged, for example:

• 1 Student and 1 Professional – 25% discount applied
• 1 Student and 2 Professionals – no discount applied
• Where are there are more than 1 Student the same rule applies as above.
